Identity Theft Becomes a Plague:
Average
amount per victim obtained by identity thieves from financial
institutions equals more the $6,500. Identity thieves victimized
thousands of people last year by stealing their financial information
and branding some with criminal records. This fast growing crime
accounted for more than 40% of consumer fraud complaints. The Federal
Trade Commission has recently reported that identity theft complaints
far exceeded other areas of fraud.
The figures come from a government database
of more than 200,000
complaints collected in 2001 from more than 50 law enforcement and
consumer groups. The number of people victimized by identity theft may
be as high as 750,000 last year.
One of the leading consumers groups, recommends that you should look at
your credit report at least twice a year, shred personal documents
before throwing away, and cleanse wallets and purses of old receipts
and printed Social Security numbers.
Credit card fraud accounts for almost 42% of
identity theft complaints.
It cost the average identity theft victim more than $1,000 to clean up
the mess left by identity thieves, the FTC said.
